If you haven’t heard, TIME’s Person of the Year 2017 has been announced, with the title going to “the Silence Breakers”, the women who spoke out against sexual harassment and assault, triggering revelations about movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, US TV presenter Matt Lauer, and many more.
Although TIME has said this is a movement lacking a particular leader or figurehead, the magazine highlights the contributions of some people in particular, including Tarana Burke, the creator of the #MeToo hashtag, Taylor Swift, who won a civil case against an ex-DJ for groping her and Ashley Judd, one of the first alleged victims of Harvey Weinstein to go on the record against the film producer.
Coming shortly after Donald Trump openly lied about turning down the chance to be TIME’s Person of the Year, the announcement caused a mini meltdown on Twitter. Here are some of our favorite tweets celebrating #PersonOfTheYear…
Woke Twitter had a ball
Honesty can be the most powerful tool at our disposal. Thank you to each and every woman who has broken their silence. And to those still out there– we're here to support you if and when you're ready. #PersonOfTheYear https://t.co/ljf9mdPFMv

What a great message this gives to all women and men who are not afraid to stand up: The Silence Breakers are TIME’s 2017 Person of the Year! Thank you #TimeMagazine #PersonOfTheYear pic.twitter.com/CbBwaWh540

Show it to your daughters. Show it to your sons. Show it to the soon-to-be-ex-President. #Loser https://t.co/6U0LJLGKkM

Trump isn’t Person of the Year, but TIME’s piece on The Silence Breakers calls Trump a ‘precipitating factor’ in the #metoo movement. “In this case, you had Harvey Weinstein, and before that you had Trump.” https://t.co/fYaJLcTgq6

This is powerful. It is also a painful testament to our allegedly advanced and civilized society’s epidemic sexual abuse.

Taylor Swift fans entered the fourth dimension
TAYLOR SWIFT IS TIME'S PERSON OF THE YEAR OF 2017 FOR SPEAKING UP AND I WON'T LET ANY OF YOU INVALIDATE WHAT SHE DID.

For those who are asking why Taylor Swift is included in TIME's "Person of the Year 2017: The Silence Breakers"
— TAYLORD SWIFT (@TAYLORDSWlFT) December 6, 2017
(These are written by Time's EDITOR-IN-CHIEF and a Pulitzer prize finalist, so don't y'all go discrediting the selection process solely because you don't like Taylor.) pic.twitter.com/n4lFZNZdRA
TAYLOR SWIFT IS ON TIME’S PERSON OF THE YEAR 2017
— allain (@swiftreputation) December 6, 2017
also. the fact that taylor is getting backlash for being one of time’s people of the year after standing up against her sexual assaulter, just because she’s taylor swift, is BEYOND sickening & a very good example as to why people don’t speak up. #PersonOfTheYear #TimeMagazine

Some people anticipated another Trump Twitter meltdown
I keep checking @realDonaldTrump's Twitter feed expecting him to say something self-centered, insecure, and totally unnecessary about Time's #PersonOfTheYear, "The Silence Breakers."

After a 15-hour silence, and the #PersonOfTheYear' snub from #TIME Magazine, this is the best #Trump can tweet - just minutes ago: pic.twitter.com/Zq2bX72EFM

Of course, someone had to make #PersonOfTheYear about net neutrality…
